Four Wooster High School students qualified as semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit® Scholarship Program. SeniorsOwen Holt-Frank, Olivia VanSickle, Sophia VanSickle and Rheanna Velasquez are among the semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program held by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Semifinalists represent the top 1% nationally.
“We are very proud of Owen, Olivia, Sophia and Rheanna for being named National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists,” said Wooster High School Principal Tyler Keener. “These four students put in the extra effort to excel in academics and extracurricular activities, and their hard work, perseverance and dedication deserves to be recognized.”
Approximately 1.5 million juniors from more than 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
The four Wooster High School students will continue on to compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded in the spring. To advance to become a finalist, students must submit a detailed application including their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstration of leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
“We know these students have incredibly bright futures ahead of them, and it is such an honor to have them as part of the Wooster City School District,” said Dr. Michael Tefs. “These four students have scored in the top 99 percentile nationally and, as a community, we should all acknowledge and celebrate this amazing accomplishment.”
The 2020 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
