February is Heart Healthy Month

  •
The Wooster City School District is again partnering with the American Heart Association (AHA) throughout February to showcase National Heart Health Month. To discover and understand the importance of hearth health, the district has organized several unique events and activities for students and staff to enjoy.

On Feb. 2, the month will kick off with national "Wear Red" Day - to represent the color of healthy hearts. Elementary school assemblies will take place featuring the Perry Hot Shots.

Also on Feb. 2, the "Heart Health Showcase" varsity basketball game will take place at Wooster High School. The game, a "Red-Out," will feature heart health facts, a half-time jump-rope fundraiser for AHA. In the lobby, there will be blood pressure screenings, training for hands-only CPR, a photo opportunity and a graffiti wall. Wooster students in preschool through grade 12 will receive free admission to the game if they wear an article of red clothing such as a red shirt, pants, sweater or jacket.

During the week of Feb. 5-9, Wooster will have a Spirit Week district-wide that will include daily announcements of heart-healthy tips. Each day, students will participate by dressing up to support specific themes. Spirit week will begin on Monday with "Sock It to Heart Disease" day, also known as "Crazy Sock Day." Tuesday is "Put a Lid on Heart Disease," which encourages students to wear hats. Wednesday is "Warm Up Your Heart" day, when students will wear flannels, and on Thursday, students will "Team Up Against Heart Disease" by wearing their favorite team jersey. The week will conclude with "Be a Heart Hero" day on Friday, where students can dress up as superheroes.

To conclude Heart Health Month, there will be Hoops for Heart at Edgewood Middle School will take place from Feb. 20-23.
