Wooster High School Victorious on Channel 5 "Academic Challenge"

(April 03, 2020) – The Wooster High School academic challenge team won its recent appearance on the Saturday morning television show “Academic Challenge.”

The show features three high school teams competing against each other to answer a variety of trivia questions, including math, science, history and other topics. Wooster’s three-person team consisted of senior Rheanna Velasquez and sophomores Hayden Michel and Zachary Keating. They competed against all-senior teams from GlenOak High School and Lake High School.

“I am so proud of my team this year for winning OCC for the second year in a row and for my group that competed in the television show and showing off how great of a district of educators and level of student Wooster has,” said Dylan Ruff, academic challenge coach and biology and PLTW Engineering teacher at Wooster High School.

Ruff applied to have Wooster High School compete on the show last year and found out earlier this school year that they were selected. Due to scheduling conflicts, three of the four seniors on the Wooster academic challenge team had to drop out. Two days before filming, Ruff asked his sophomore students to step up, and they happily agreed.

Unfortunately, the TV appearance marks the last competition for Wooster High School this year due to schools closing over concerns of COVID-19. They were scheduled to compete at the Ohio Academic Challenge regional tournament on April 18, but that has since been cancelled.

“Congratulations to Rheanna, Hayden and Zachary for making Wooster proud on their successful TV appearance and to the rest of the team for helping them prepare and cheering them on!” said Dr. Michael Tefs, superintendent of Wooster City Schools. “While it is sad that they are missing out on the rest of this year’s competition, I am so happy they had this memorable experience. They were terrific examples of our excellent Wooster High School students and faculty.”
