Wooster High School Excels at OMEA District Competition

Students from Wooster High School competed in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District VI Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Event at Akron Springfield High School on Saturday, Jan. 25. Fifteen students received a superior or excellent rating.

Students are adjudicated on a five-level system: Superior (I), Excellent (II), Good (III), Fair (IV) or Poor (V). The event featured solo performances as well as and small groups of performers, or ensembles. Soloists and ensembles choose their own music within OMEA guidelines.

“It was a great event for our students and the school as a whole, and the music staff is very proud of our student’s accomplishments.” said Craig French, director of bands and orchestra at Wooster High School. 

The Wooster High School students who received a Superior rating are: Rheanna Velasquez, Brendan French, Sophia Lee, Aiden Call, Lydia Cooper, Bradley Moses, Ben Haven, Katie Griffin, Seth Jarrett, Rebekah Lay and Paonia Campbell. The students who received an Excellent rating include: Gabe Thompson, Natasha Murzda, Emily Smith and Lauren Ciha. Ben Haven was recognized with a Superior rating for two solo performances – one on the  euphonium and one on the violin.

“We are so proud of these musicians and the countless hours they put in practicing and perfecting their craft,” said Tyler Keener, principal of Wooster High School. “They are very talented students with a great directorial team behind them. I would like to congratulate every student who performed at the competition and wish them good luck in all of their future performances.”
