The Wooster City School District is proud to announce that Ashley Tomassetti, a fourth-grade teacher at Melrose Elementary, has been nominated for the 2021 Ohio Teacher of the Year program, which honors, promotes and celebrates excellence in teaching and the educational profession.
The Ohio Teacher of the Year program identifies exemplary teachers throughout the state and celebrates their effective work inside and outside of the classroom. The program’s mission is to provide exceptional teachers with opportunities for professional development and establish them as leaders and advocates for public education.
“I am honored to be chosen among so many excellent educators; I work in a district that is full of amazing people that are doing the right things for students and families,” said Mrs. Tomassetti. “I am excited for the opportunities that are ahead and pride myself in being a life-long learner. This has and always will be so much more than a job for me. It is a true passion - I absolutely love helping students feel empowered and find their voice.”
To be eligible for the Ohio Teacher of the Year program, a candidate must have a valid Ohio professional educator license, a minimum of five years' teaching experience, be currently employed in a state-approved public school, give direct instruction to students as the teacher of record at least 50% of their contracted time, have no previous regional or state OTOY recognition, and plan to continue actively teaching. Teachers are honored for their ability to encourage students to achieve excellence and lifelong learning, their leadership and collaboration, as well as for being advocates for public education, students, teachers and the teaching profession.
“This is an incredible and well-deserved honor for Mrs. Tomassetti,” said Dr. Michael Tefs, superintendent of Wooster City School District. “She is a tremendous teacher who shines in the classroom by creating exciting and engaging lessons for her students. She truly loves what she does and is an excellent role model. Congratulations, Ashley, for being recognized for your hard work and dedication. We are lucky to have you in Wooster City Schools!”
