(Sept. 22, 2017) – Four Wooster High School students qualified as semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit® Scholarship Program. Seniors Jeremy Lun, Jonathan Michel, Estelle Shaya and Veronica Velasquez are among Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit® Scholarship Program held by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
“It is such an honor to have four National Merit® Scholarship Program Semifinalists in our school system,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael Tefs. “This recognition is significant as it correlates their achievement with the top 1 percent nationally. It is truly an amazing and fabulous honor for our school system, these four fabulous students and our entire community.”
Lun, Michel, Shaya and Velasquez will continue on to compete for the prestigious National Merit® Scholarships. To advance to become a finalist, students must submit a detailed application including their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstration of leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
“We are confident Jeremy, Jonathan, Estelle and Veronica will have many great accomplishment in the future,” said Tyler Keener, Wooster High School Principal. “We are so proud of these students and wish them the very best of luck as they continue on to compete for National Merit® Scholarships.”
The 2018 National Merit® Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
