Students from Wooster’s Cornerstone Elementary are showing off their culinary chops! Third- and fourth-grade students have the opportunity to participate in Sodexo’s nationwide 2020 Future Chefs Challenge.
The Future Chefs Challenge, which is sponsored by the district’s foodservice provider, Sodexo, allows students to create and submit a recipe that reimagines their favorite school lunch meal.
“This is the first year that Wooster is participating, but I am hoping that it will be well-received and we can have a competition between the elementary schools in the future,” said Don Lewis, foodservice manager for Wooster City Schools. “I am hoping that all of the participants have some fun and learn new cooking/presentation skills.”
The students’ reimagined recipes were due to the school by Jan. 31. Judges will review the entrants and choose three to five of their favorites to compete in a cooking challenge that will take place at the school on March 12 at 4 p.m. The students whose recipes are chosen will be asked to cook and present their dish for judging on March 12. Adult volunteers will help the students prepare their meals.
The judges will choose one student to represent the Wooster City School District in the national contest. His/her recipe will be sent to Sodexo where it will be evaluated on taste, health value, simplicity and creativity. Five finalists from around the country will be selected to create a video of themselves preparing their dish. Online voting will determine the competition’s winner. The winning recipe will get a spot on next year’s school lunch menus.
